Memories of Harbors: Exhibition of Archives on the South and North Ports of Taiwan

Memories of Harbors: Exhibition of Archives on the South and North Ports of Taiwan
As an island surrounded by the sea, Taiwan is located at the main naval passage of East Asia and connect to the sea and the rest of world by ports. As time goes on, the convergence and fusion of different people, products, and cultures have given birth to Taiwan's unique and diverse nature. In the past, some risked their lives to cross the seas to come to this island for dreams. Also, some people traversed the oceans from the island to foreign lands in search of their aspirations. The harbor has therefore become a starting point for those pursuing these dreams.
In the 1860s, Taiwan opened up her ports for trade, which was an important watershed moment in terms of foreign trade and economic development. This also marked the start of a shift in Taiwan's international status. The Ports of Kaohsiung and Keelung gradually stood out from the others as they experienced continuous development both during and after the Japanese occupation, until they finally became the two modern international ports of the south and the north. With Kaohsiung in the south and Keelung in the north, these two ports have played essential roles in Taiwan's rising prominence in the world for more than a hundred years. They also shoulder the essential burden of developing Taiwan's foreign and maritime economics and trade.
The primary subject of this exhibition is the development of these two ports in the south and north of Taiwan: the Ports of Kaohsiung and Keelung. The exhibition showcases a total of 83 pieces from the archives from 1913 to 2004. These pieces weave a narrative of the transformations of the two ports, the memories of the areas, and many touching stories.
The exhibition comprises five sections:
1. Aerial View of the Two Ports
2. The Great Ships Inbound
3. Exploring the Two Ports
4. Memories of the Two Ports
5. Taiwan Setting Sail
